Some argue that past traumatic experiences, such as a stressful situation at work, can have a significant impact on an individual’s emotional triggers and responses, while others believe that individuals can overcome past trauma through personal growth and self help strategies.
At first you may not even notice that you are being emotionally triggered. So how do we go about recognizing when you are emotionally triggered? This can happen when you are dealing with tight deadlines at work or even when you have a disagreement with a colleague.
You can begin to feel overwhelmed with emotions when you are triggered. This can then lead you to having negative thought patterns and beliefs about yourself. Until you learn to handle and recognize these triggers, they will continue to come up in different situations throughout your life. This can however be worked on to help identify your emotional triggers and understand how they may impact your thoughts, behaviours and relationships.
You start to have a moment of self-discovery when you suddenly have a better understanding of what makes you feel the way you do, and why. Not only do you begin to improve your emotional regulation, but you start to improve your mental health and stress levels. I have found that once I was able to recognize and understand my triggers, I then began to understand why I react the way I do to certain situations.
